The 8A series is a very special one: not only because it bears the signature of Adriana Ochoa, who now wields the oenological baton at Bodegas Ochoa, or even because they were the brain child of one of the country’s most renowned oenologists, awarded Newcomer of the Year in 2014.
The magic of this series lies in what is behind it, the meaning and the underlying concept. The 8A series brings together three generations. It is a tribute to an entire winemaking family.
This is what gives the series its name, which, like everything else at Bodegas Ochoa, is a tribute to tradition, but heavily laced with innovation.
Adriana explains that “My grandfather’s emblem was 8A. My father taught me to appreciate varietals and I have produced these wines using the latest cutting-edge techniques, while trying, in a different way with each of these wines to convey our philosophy and our love of the land and of wine”.
8A Mil Gracias is a different, new, elegant wine that perfectly marries the traditional with the modern.
It is one that Adriana had always wanted to make, because until now Graciano grapes have always been used in blends.
So it was a challenge for her to make a 100% Graciano wine. “I have followed every step from the vineyard to the winery to create a modern wine from a variety that has been grown on our lands for many years”.
8A Mil Gracias is a special wine whose main feature is that the grapes are picked at their peak of ripeness. Graciano tends to be among the last varieties to be harvested.
Once in the winery, there follows a few days of cold maceration and then temperature-controlled malolactic fermentation in French and American oak, and aging in the cask for 9 months.
To the eye: Strikingly deep violet in colour.
On the nose: Here is where the reductive nature of Graciano emerges. It needs to breatheand be aerated, so decanting is always recommendable. As the wine begins to breathe, it releases notes of minerals, ripe black fruit and white pepper.
In the mouth: An explosion of aromas, combined with soft, pleasant tannins that beg a second glass.
Recommended serving temperature: 16ºC-18ºC.
